28 Feb Irish Wisdom Wednesday: On Kinship
Irish Wisdom: On Kinship
For those of you who are on my mailing list you will have noticed that I recently launched a new Irish Wisdom range.
The inspiration for this collection came from my love of languages and the history and wisdom that is unique to each and every mother tongue.
I think that Irish has a particular poetic nature to it.
As a language it lends itself to that particular wisdom that is both wise and funny at the same time.
I feel that the roots of a lot of Irish humour can be found in our native tongue.
And so over the past few months I have been compiling all my favourite Irish proverbs and sayings.
And in the process discovering many, many new ones.
By the end of the research process I had so many I had to start dividing them up into themes.
The first two pencil sets to be launched in the Irish Wisdom Collection are:
Irish Wisdom: On Love and Marriage
To celebrate this, each Wednesday I will be taking a quote from one of the pencils and creating a free Quotable Artwork for you.
Because I think we all need a little bit of Irish wisdom in our lives.
Each quote is written in both Irish and English on the pencils, celebrating the Irish language.
Especially given that it is Bliain na Gaeilge this year, 2018.
On Kinship
The first Irish saying that I am looking at in this series is on kinship.
A little kinship is better than a lot of charity.
Is fearr beagán den ghaol ná mórán den charthanas.
There is a lot of wisdom in this Irish proverb. It is so important to have the support of friends and family around us.
They are the kinship that we are born with and that we gather throughout our lives. Having this support structure to lean on in the hard times and celebrate the good times is far better than the charity of strangers. We should all support our local and global communities.
Who is your community?
I feel like in today’s world we all have our feet in several communities.
You have your family
Your friends, many of mine who live all over the world
You have your online community. I have a fantastic support group of fellow makers through Notonthehighstreet that offer me so much support, many of whom I have never met
I have online communities built around things I love like BOOKS and BOOKS!
I have a community built around a podcast I listen to and the SLACK Group that the founder Jennifer created, Creating Your Own Path.
Through crafts I have found such a diverse group of friends, all ages and backgrounds and we come together joined by our love of making
The definition of community is ever changing and malleable, navigating new worlds can be challenging but it is also exciting and boundless in its potential.
Tell me about your people!
Leave a comment and let me know about the random, serendipitous or totally unexpected connections that you have made through your life.
And remember
A little kinship is better than a lot of charity.
Is fearr beagán den ghaol ná mórán den charthanas.
