08 Feb Wednesday Wisdom: Haruki Murakami
This weeks Wednesday Wisdom comes from Haruki Murakami. If you have not read something by him you really need to. My recommendation to start with is at the bottom of this post. This is one of my favourite quotes on reading (and life). It’s from his book Norweigan Wood, a coming of age love story both parts heroic and tragic.
If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking – Haruki Murakami
It’s so true isn’t it. And it’s hard to do, to stand out from the crowd and go your own way. But we can all start with a book. Next time you go into a book shop* step away from the best seller section and go for a wander. And as pretty as the covers are don’t choose a book simply for divine artwork. Read the first few pages, see what you like and read something different.
I recently did a ‘book chain’ on Facebook. Not sure if that is the right word for it. But it works like the old chain letters except you get books instead. And it was fantastic. I sent one person my favourite book of all time Shantaram then I got seven of my friends to participate and I got so many books in return that I would never have thought to read. It was a great lesson in trying different things. I read from genres and authors I’d never tried and while some weren’t for me I still gave them a try.
*Yes, I still go into actual book shops, I could spend hours browsing through all the book sections, looking at the new editions of old classics. I love book artwork. And the art section. I could die and go to heaven looking on books on art and travel. My favourite book shop that I have ever been to is Powell’s in Portland,Oregan, USA. They give you a map when you go in. A MAP PEOPLE!
BOOK RECOMMENDATION
I have only read a few of Murakami’s books but my favourite by him has to be What I talk about when I talk about running I am not a runner, although how I would love to say that I am. But I just loved this little tome on running and so so much more.
Have a great week
