22 Mar A new product design: Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite novels of all time. I remember studying it in school and falling in love with Jane Austen’s Darcy and Elizabeth. It is the book that I have reread the most and will probably continue to do so for many years to come.
A few months ago I scribbled down an idea I had for a new pencil set. This involved me rereading Pride and Prejudice, which was a hardship indeed!

I’m thinking Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice. I have an idea for a new product. And it’s exciting… Well I’m excited! The copy of Pride and Prejudice in the photo is one of my most prized possessions. My grandfather gave it to me when I was 14 and the book itself was published in 1905 so it 116 years old this year. Now that is what you call history. That you can feel and touch and imagine the hands it has passed through. And every time I pick it up I remember my granddad and sitting reading with him. And that is why I love old books. Because they always tell more than one story.

When I started noting down the quotes I wanted to use for the pencils I was so sure that there would be a balance of Elizabeth and Darcy’s words but the more I wrote and picked and re picked I found that the five quotes that most embodied the novel to me were actually Darcy’s words. Perhaps it was my own love of the tale of Darcy and Elizabeth, and I know I am not alone in this, that drew me to theses scenes. Austen so perfectly portrays a proud man bought low by love! Now of course you are also tied down by length and how it fits onto each pencil, but still for a character who says little, what Fitwilliam Darcy does say is worth quoting.
Each pencil has a different quote on it. And all 5 pencils come in a matching gift box. I used the famous silhouette of Jane Austen as the base for the box design. The background was created from an original tea stained paper that I made.
